We've also included A Pie Night That Gives Back, an optional idea for turning a gathering of willing hands and hearts into an opportunity to meet a genuine need in your community.

The collection encourages hosts to find the need first by coordinating with a trusted church, school, shelter, food pantry, ministry or community organization rather than simply collecting things and hoping they are useful. Participation is always optional; everyone remains equally welcome at the table.

It isn't meant to turn Pie Night into a fundraiser. It is simply another way a full table might make a little room for someone else.

Make it yours.

Although our own Pie Night grew from the Thanksgiving season, the tradition doesn't have to belong to one particular date.

Gather after Thanksgiving when schedules are calmer. Have a summer Pie Night. Gather friends over Memorial Day weekend. Make it part of Father's Day. Bring out berry pies for the Fourth of July. Welcome spring with lemon and coconut. Gather because someone is home from college—or simply because it has been far too long.

The date isn't sacred. The people are precious.

Someday, the little ones reaching for whipped cream may be the grown-ups carrying pies through the door. There may be new babies at the table. New spouses. New friends who quietly became family. There may also be people whose chairs we would give anything to fill one more time.

So don't wait for the perfect house, the perfect menu or the perfect day.

Make Grandma's recipe. Buy the pie when you don't have time to bake one. Take the photograph. Write down the funny thing somebody said. Stay for another cup of coffee. Cut the slices a little smaller when one more person comes.
